"The Star" Paper Painting

Image
Each year I create a small piece specifically for a new   Christmas card. This year I feel especially grateful for  my blessings and wanted to reflect the Joy that I feel at  this holiday season w/ the Star that shown to proclaim  Christ's birth, as seen from here in the Western Hemisphere.  6x6 inches on wood panel

Snow White and Rose Red, 18x24" Colored pencil/ink

The Grimm Brother's Fairy Tale of Snow White and Rose Red has always been one of my favorites. Read it again if you get the chance, and perhaps my illustration will linger in your mind as you do.....

"Robin Bird" Paper Painting 7x14 inch canvas

Image
While tradition would have a beautiful, dainty Canary singing in this cage, my favorite bird is the Robin, especially the young, fluffy, awkward ones. Their song makes me feel like I'm home wherever I live at the moment. Of course the cage stays open, it's hard to sing without freedom!

Phases of a Work in Progress

1st Phase 2nd Phase  Making it up as I go along. So fun and freeing to just draw and paper without all the planning for once!  Maybe I'll do this more often. What do you think?

Paper Painting, "Good Scents", 11x14 inch

Image
This piece started as a still life with these beautiful, cut glass, perfume bottles and evolved from there. The mirror belonged to my husbands Nana and fit in perfectly with the decidedly "girly" feeling. I love taking snippets of a woman's life, enlarging them, and taking time to develop a mood and texture to express that moment. Hmmmm... I can smell the perfume....

"Ladybug" Latest Paper Painting

Can you see her? 6x6 inch on cradled birch panel

"Early Spring Sunshine" 6x6 inch paper painting

Image
I was asked to create something bright, cheerful and feminine for a birthday card and you don't get much more cheerful than the early spring sun peeking through to warm the earth and make the apple blossoms pop! Prints are available now at  http://1-robin-birrell.artistwebsites.com/index.html

In progress...

Much darker color scheme and overall "feel" than I usually paint but I've been feeling the desire to illustrate more lately as well as collage, and I like the way these ladies tell a story. Yes, this is all paper w/ a previous colored pencil drawing of mermaids on tracing paper cut and applied. I'll repost when it's finished!

She's Finished! 12x18 paper painting

This is total fantasy gardening. I do realize that these plants don't all bloom at the same time and gowns are not very practical when pruning, but this was so much fun to imagine and paint!

New "Beautiful"#2, 10x10 inch paper painting. This is the first of several companion pieces to the original Art Nouveau "Beautiful"(see October 2011 post). After all, there are so many kinds of beautiful, why stop with one?

"Ready to Leave" 4 - 6x6 inch panels, collage on wood ~

Image
They're finished and ready to hang! No framing necessary.  Check out Mother Bird on the far right, I think she's ready too! :)

"Untitled" graphite illustration~ I've received many excellent suggestions from you all about what she might be so intent on looking at, but I find that I can't bring myself to fill in the blank space. Feeling her intensity and wondering is just too interesting right now!
